I wanted to revisit the topic of what to wear to a session, specifically one that takes place in the winter months. I whole heartedly believe that clothing can make or break a session. Not only because it helps set the mood for your photos, but because it’s such a great way to showcase your personality and style. If you’re clothes are too constricting, you may have a hard time with certain poses. Or if they’re inappropriate for the days forecast, you may find yourself distracted by the cool temperatures. Though I always stress the importance of comfort, here are some tips to achieve both style and comfort for your winter session:
- Let’s start with the obvious: a coat! If it’s particular chilly out, your coat will stay on you for most of the session, so make it your statement piece. It can be fun and casual, stylish and chic – whatever you decide, it should set the tone for the rest of your outfit.
- My clients know that I’m constantly preaching layers and it’s even more important in the winter months. Not only will it add visual interest to your photos, it will keep you warm when the temperature drops suddenly.
- Since winter months are usually void of color, I suggest incorporating a pop of color(s) in your outfit for some contrast. But if bright colors are not your thing, the starkness of winter also plays the perfect backdrop for soft neutral tones.
- This is an extension of the last two points, but I believe it deserves its own mention. Try to incorporate fun textures, patterns and colors by way of accessories. Hats, gloves, scarves – all functional items, but can significantly play up your style quotient as well.
